I absolutely love judging rabbits, and I just wish that I had discovered that fact a few years earlier. I find that it is the best part of our lovely hobby, to be trusted with the fancier’s best hopeful(s). One gets a first class view of everything that has been entered into the show, fur, fancy, lop and/or rex – an array of many different kinds of breeds, each one so very special, with its own characteristics, which we call the Breed Standard.
There is nothing about judging I don’t like, from the preparations i.e. the revision of the breed standards, to the ‘traditional’ ironing of the judges’ coat the night before, from the checking out of what best route to take to the show, to checking that the briefcase contains all the bits and pieces for the book steward and, of course, the breed standards book. The ruler to measure the English Lops’ ears has a permanent residence in the car, just in case!
And then it’s off, to yet another exciting show. It is worth the early start in the morning, the sometimes long drive, just to be there, to be privileged to be chosen to judge a show – it just gives me such fulfilment, every time.
